Montevideo, history in short

Montevideo may still be better known as the South American city, but the Helsinki based five-piece is piling up some pressure on the Uruguayan capital. Their history dates back to year 2000 when, following up the burial of previous venture The Pansies, singer-guitarist Sam Shingler and drummer Tommi Lehtonen teamed with life-long friend, bassist Joakim Schonert, to form a new band. Keyboard player and multi-instrumentalist Aleksi Ojala and talented guitarist-songwriter Michael McDonald were soon to follow, and by 2001 they had adapted the name Montevideo. Their first release saw daylight in 2003, when Panamerican featured on Klub Sputnik's compilation box.

Since then, Montevideo's well-crafted, emotion-packed pop songs have won over many hearts: Their debut EP Against the Grain was released in Finland February 2006, making it to 17 on the official single chart, and gaining a nice amount of radio airplay.

Montevideo's debut album, titled Come Clean, was released in Finland April 2006 by Stupido Records. Lyrically, the albums carrying themes are those closest to humanity itself: the quest to find one's true self and place in life. Also present are observations of everyday-life, people and relationships. Montevideo's soulful, airy and catching songs have drawn comparisons to such contemporaries as Death Cab For Cutie and Doves. The album has received a warm welcome from music fans and critics alike, and made it to 28 on Finland's official album chart.

2008 has seen Montevideo swipe the dust from their rickenbackers and return with a new line up and exciting new material. They are currently working on songs for their second album, although they've stopped setting more deadlines.

Both Come Clean and Against the Grain EP are available online at iTunes or Stupido Shop.
