DESCRIPTION:
This a short film about the Manor estate in Sheffield. It was made by students as a way of understanding place, people and the themes of a project based around the old Manor Castle.

Tony Broomhead has run a number of projects at undergraduate level at the Sheffield School of Architecture that uses film as a starting point for research. Most of these projects have focused around the south of Sheffield and are about understanding people and place.
As a way of introducing the site to students they work in groups to critically analyse both the context and its portrayal on film and in the media.
The aim of the work is to develop an understanding of the site and the people who live there. This phase of the project encourages the use of different approaches to urban analysis and students are able to explore alternative presentation techniques. The resulting films aim to combine the analytical and the personal to tell the story of place.
The students learn to understand how film can mix together a range of media and techniques to both record and influence the design process. Cinematic mapping encourages groups to analyse a given site through the eyes of residents and the resulting 10 minute films establish a theoretical agenda and acts as a starting point for the design work.
This technique is an adaptation of the film workshop methodology and is focused on starting a project with an open mind but quickly establishing clear drivers based on an intimate understanding of place.
