PUBLISHED:  Oct 04, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
Hobart Earle conducts the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, May 2013, in the National Philharmonic Hall of Ukraine ( city of Kyiv ) . Yevhen Stankovych was born in 1942 in the town of Svaliava in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains in the south west of Ukraine. His ballet "Rasputin" was originally staged in 1986 with the title "Prometheus". The first staging of the ballet as "Rasputin" was in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1989. In the grotesque satire of the 'Banya' ( Bath House ) , pandemonium breaks loose in an orgiastic revelry, interrupted by raucous laughter, howls and distorted quotations of the Tsarist national anthem and Mephistopheles' song about the Golden Calf from Gounod's "Faust".
