One of the most exciting aspect of live performance is the relationship and communication among the performers on stage, which is why theater and film are so entertaining. In music, this can often be lost, as the performers become engulfed in their individual responsibilities to create a successful performance. Consumed is a piece by Jordan Brooks that aims to create a relationship among the performers on stage, giving the musician a larger role in telling the story of the music, while musically narrating the scenes and events portrayed by the dancer, as choreographed by Ashley Coia. The solo marimba performer represents an aged soul looking into his past as personified by the solo dancer. At first the dancer represents his youthful days. Slowly she becomes effected by a crippling addiction that consumes her soul. She struggles to overcome her entanglement, but just as she sees the light, she becomes consumed even further. The climax of the performance takes place when the aged man and his youthful past join souls to become one again. They rest in remembrance of triumph and victory as they build to their final dance of joy… at least, for today.
