Lion Youth - Virgo Records - 1981 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 28, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
Uploaded this evening is one of my favourite extended play roots reggae 12" records that I have here at Penguin Towers, resting safe in one of my old, but strong, D.J boxes. To add to my appreciation of this 12" record, my version is pressed on a sweet but rare blue vinyl!

Lion Youth, competing with himself on both the vocals and toasting roles, backed up with a rhythm which is powerful enough to put your windows through. That's not a lie, just an alternative fact.

The rhythm, courtesy of John Rubie (John was the producer of Freedom Sounds UK, Virgo Stomach and JR Records) is tough enough in any case.

Lion Youth born Clarence Williamson on November 1961 in London, England but travelling to Jamaica with his family in 1973 where he completed his schooling and played guitar.

During his years in Jamaica he entered and won many local talent competitions where his voice was often compared to that of Gregory Isaacs. The similarities really are uncanny...

His career took off when he returned to the U.K with his family.

He linked up with Time Records for his debut release, ‘Bristol Riot’ A.K.A ‘I’ve Got To Go’, a prophetic comment relating to the inner-city disturbances in the U.K around that time.

He consolidated his position with ‘Chant In A Dance’, which was his last record that was released by Time Records.

He initially performed as a singer but discovered he could perform equally as well as a D.J.

In 1981 he released the massive cut ‘Rat Cut A Bottle’ on a 12" record, released by Virgo Records, which became an anthem in the roots market.

In 1982, he appeared at the 5th Black Echoes Annual Reggae Awards, headlined by Michigan And Smiley, alongside the infamous Ranking Dread and Carroll Thompson, where his performance was critically acclaimed.

The show was followed by a tour of the Netherlands, returning to the U. K where he continued to promote his work.

Make sure the playback volume on this YouTube post is loud enough to shake the floor.
