(Belated) Bicycle Day series (Part 1, 2 of 8) Also formed in 1965 (though in San Francisco), Jefferson Airplane is another pioneer in psychedelic rock. Vocalist Grace Slick joined the band in 1966, bringing with her this Alice in Wonderland (and LSD)-inspired song which she wrote for her previous band. They recorded it for their second album, 1967’s “Surrealistic Pillow,” another giant of a psych rock release. This particular performance on Sunday morning at Woodstock is pretty famous, though the band apparently didn’t like the gig. My dad’s in the crowd somewhere; he told me he was awake because The Who woke him up at dawn after Janis Joplin had put him to sleep.
