Fundraiser: Bob Burduwal used ceremonial mago - played by Darryl and Peter Brown - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 25, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
Darryl Dikarrnga Brown needs no introduction here, there's heaps of video footage of him already on YouTube which we've uploaded in the past. But what you might not know is that he suffered a near-fatal heart attack earlier in the year and ended up in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Darwin Hospital. He now has an artificial part in his body which is keeping him alive. Unable to tour with the White Cockatoo group or to continue work in CDEP mud-brick building in Maningrida, Darryl is currently recuperating in Melbourne in the care of iDIDJ Australia.

We are doing what we can to help Darryl but we also need your support, and as such, we are running a fundraiser for Darryl's truck appeal as well as to ensure his stay with us is comfortable and health-boosting. He's on a daily dose of strong herbal medicines we imported from overseas, and his meals with us are nutritious, fresh and - we hope - delicious!

Our fundraiser is simple... we have 10 outstanding instruments specially commissioned from Darryl's brother-in-law, Bob Burduwal, who just so happens to be the best mago maker we know of. Part proceeds from the sale of the ten mago go towards Darryl's truck appeal, see here:

First up is a stunning mago with artwork that is a departure from Burduwal's standard hand-print design. The instrument has been used ceremonially in the community and shows a bit of wear and tear as to be expected. In this clip, Darryl plays the mago first followed by his younger brother Peter Brown.

Darryl and Peter have 1 mother, Daphne Lupu, and 2 fathers, Peter Maymunungbi and Don Waybanangga. Darryl's father, Maymunungbi, passed away when Darryl was an infant. His mother re-married, and had 1 daughter and 2 sons from Waybanangga: Christine, Peter and Keith (oldest to youngest).

Maymunungbi's sister was Jack Nawilil's and Bob Burduwal's mother, making Nawilil and Burduwal first cousins of Darryl, or in the Aboriginal way, brothers-in-law.

Whilst Peter has great rhythm, Darryl's richness and texture cannot be compared - he is after all the Master Blaster even when sick!

If you would like to help in Darryl's recovery and have enjoyed and learned from the many YouTube clips on here, you can make a donation securely and conveniently using Paypal, please take a look at the following page:
