The year was 2006...Margate, once a 5 piece in their demo days was now a power trio. As a band still trying to define their sound one thing was for sure, they were a force to be reckoned with.
This record stood out in the sea of musical monotony plaguing the dying LA music scene. "Songs In The Key Of Awesome" was recorded and mixed in 9 days at West Beach Recorders in Los Angeles. It was a historic facility formerly known as The Producers Workshop, where Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" were recorded. As West Beach, it was home to great recordings by So Cal Icons Sublime, Pennywise, The Offspring, NOFX, Blink- 182 and Rancid just to name drop a few. This was an incredible experience for the trio, to be recording in the same studio where such great bands that they respected had recorded.
Needless to say the energy was there, The spirit was there and the outcome was 11 fantastic tracks. A great listen all the way through.
The eclectic recording had soulful vocals and drumming from Alex Helbig, amazing guitar work from Leo Peter Ferrante IV and strong yet hypnotic bass lines from Steve Weil along with collectively incorporating melody, counterpoint and time signature mayhem to give birth to this Pop Rock masterpiece. Margate wanted to make a record that was pleasing to the average listener but still had the subtleties that appealed to schooled musicians.
The sense of urgency was also there. Not knowing if this was the first and last pro recording of the band, the members scraped what little cash they had to make it happen. Even selling band gear the last day of recording to pay the studio.
Two tracks "Way Of The Gun"(featuring lead guitar by Leo Peter Ferrante III) and a cover of NOFX's "Longest Line" were recorded live and mixed by Donnell Cameron and Ben Meyer. The 9 remaining tracks were recorded and mixed by Ben Meyer. The album was mastered at Golden Mastering by JJ. Golden and released on the bands own Dogfight records.
The hard copies to this album have since been sold out but still available in digital formats. Special thanks to past members of the band Leo Peter Ferrante IV, Brandon Dela Cruz, Todd Johnsen and Joe Tesei.
