dave stafford - the weirding way I (HD) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 11, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
this is a live, improvised guitar loop.

"the weirding way I" is a loop experiment, an attempt to use modern guitar technology to emulate the earliest days of looping, when the only looping device available was two open-reel tape recorders - to see if something sonically similar can be created using today's modern digital technology. the rules for this experiment were as follows: 1) the loop must be between 4 and 6 seconds in length, no longer 2) the guitar sound must be relatively dry - only distortion, compression or wah sounds are permitted 3) no choruses, flangers, delays, reverbs, etc. to be employed.

this version is the loop only; as it happened, using the roland rc-50 to capture new input in four-second increments. while this experiment is successful in a limited fashion, it will require many more forays into mastering this form, which is deceptively difficult to emulate, before we achieve something closer to the original tape-recorder-based loop sound. the characteristic "dull" sound of the earlier looped layers is missing, which makes the modern version somewhat too bright, with the "older pieces" of guitar too prominent in the mix. future experiments may employ a digital delay to attempt to emulate the "dulling" effect on the older layers of the loop, but for now, this initial experiment is promising albeit imperfect.

a completely improvised, unrehearsed, unplanned, live performance, captured as it happened, nominally in the key of e minor, this is the fourth of several live improvs from the november 6, 2011 session; this is take one.

recorded live on november 6, 2011.
