Dear friends and music lovers,
On June 21, 2016 the world lost a truly great and influential artist, Wayne Jackson. Wayne Jackson played trumpet on many classic songs as part of the Memphis Horns and the Mar-Keys. He was on virtually every record made at Stax Records during the 1960s and can be heard on recordings by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, Staple Singers and Booker T & The MG’s. Besides his work at Stax, he was featured on many classic recordings by Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Doobie Brothers and countless other artists. He was kind enough to sit for an interview back in 2007 when we were producing our doc on Otis Redding (Dreams To Remember: The Legacy Of Otis Redding) and the concert filmed in Norway that documents the Stax-Volt Revue of 1967. He told stories with joy and passion and he was one of the best interviewees we’ve had for our numerous documentary films.
Here’s a section of that interview where Wayne speaks about his performance with Otis Redding at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.
