One of Villa-Lobos most well known and performed pieces is the Bachianas Brasieiras No.5 for Soprano and Cello Ensemble. Villa-Lobos was greatly influenced by J.S. Bach and it was this influence that drove him to compose this series of nine suites written between 1930 and 1945. Each movement has a Bachian and a Brazilian name, illustrating the fusion Villa-Lobos created between the two styles.

Dansa (Martelo)
Irirê, my little bird from the Sertão of Cariri,
Irirê, my companion,
Where is my guitar,
Where is my love?
Where is Maria?

Oh! The viola sings of such a sad fate!
(Ah!) Without the guitar that sang of its love
(Ah!) Your whistle is like the flute of the Irirê
When the flute of the Sertão whistles,
(Ah!) We suffer against our wish!

Ah! Your song arrives from deep in the Sertão
Like a breeze that softens the heart

Irirê, Sing your song
Sing more!
Sing more!
So that I can remember Cariri!
Sing Cambaxira!
Sing Juriti!
Sing Irirê
Sing, sing of the suffering!
Patativa, Bem-te-vi,
Maria wake up its day!

Sing, all you voices
All you birds from the Sertão:
Bem-te-vi! Sabia!
La! Liá liá liá...
The Sabia from the forest sings!
La! Liá liá liá...
The Sabia from the forest suffers!

Your song comes from deep in the Sertão
Like a breeze which softens the heart

Irirê, my little bird from the Sertão of Cariri...
