"A Chanteuse of formidable fame", according to a review by Billboard Magazine. Uru has been steadily proving them and others right! This Nigerian born girl who dances to the beat of her own drum is proud to be from Africa, but even more happy to be "a child of the globe". Growing up on three Continents, this singer/songwriter has been influenced by cultures from around the world.
As well as English and other languages, she speaks her native African tongue, Igbo. Perhaps this is why Uru has always had the ability to adapt to different circumstances. This could also be the reason why her music crosses all borders, and the reason why she has always successfully captivated the attention of people from all walks of life. Definitely someone you don't easily forget. Adapting though, has never meant conforming to this girl. Thus her reason for turning down certain record deals in the past. No way was Uru going to conform to any major label's profile of 'ready-made studio artist' doing manufactured formula music. Uru has created something fresh, and refused to be molded into something she's not.
Being signed to California based Tantrum Records, Uru has had the freedom to record her music, working with top producer / engineer Sjoko. Listening to her music, it is hard to believe that Uru taught herself how to play piano, write and arrange her own music, lyrics andSING. This is probably why Uru's writing has no constraints or rules. She possesses an innate understanding of the common chord that runs through all genres of music. Elements of Rock, Hip-Hop, Blues, African rhythms and timing are interwoven into her own distinct sound.
When describing her creative process, she talks of melodies or words simply coming to her. Sometimes in song, sometimes in poetry. In no particular order and at no particular hour! She often mixes languages together as if to prove the point that music is all ONE language. For instance, in her song "Iwe", she sings in English and her native language Igbo. The response has been mind-boggling. People from completely different parts of the world simply understand and love her message. Her new highly anticipated album "PEOPLE", is laced with this style. It's in English, but Uru playfully throws in lines of a dialect or two. The first song to be released is "Belle". It will also launch Uru's new brainchild; a T.V. show which according to her "has something to do with what I used to do before music". She does hint that she is out to make girls (of all ages) feel beautiful inside and out. Always staying positive and keeping her mind on the world, Uru's Album's always have one or more songs with a conscience. Her lyrics are sometimes deliberately simple, but pay close attention and you will find them profound and laced with metaphors that provoke. On her past albums, she had songs like "Wrap Up" which was for her AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN. It was well received especially in Africa and continues to rock on!
On her new album "PEOPLE", look out for her song "Dear Hunter", with its message of keeping our world 'green'.
"On the cover she stands, knee-high boots, suede coat, white hot pants, no shirt, tambourine in hand, and she has the longest legs I've ever seen. So what kind of music do you expect? Maybe a '70s funk thing, hmm? Well, turns out Uru is from West Africa, and her music has a worldly feel to it. A delight." –NYRock
