Grand vs Upright pianos: Why grand pianos are generally better. - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 15, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
There are several major reasons why a grand piano is better than an upright:

- The grand piano action has more control as most have a repetition lever holding the hammer closer to the string; this, coupled with the "lifting" action, also allows more control on softer playing.
- Grand pianos over 5ft 7in generally have longer strings than uprights.
- Longer grands have bigger soundboards which allow a deeper, richer tone.
- The pianist is facing other musicians or the audience and also looks out into the room.

Two points not mentioned in the video:
- The left hand una corda pedal moves the hammer sideways, allowing a softer part of the hammer to hit the string and thus giving a softer tone.
- The music desk, being higher on a grand piano is better positioned than most modern uprights. Older uprights usually have a swing style music desk which is the same height as that on grands.
