When, at the Council of Trent, the secular influence on sacred music was criticised, Palestrina showed with the splendid six-part mass in memory of Pope Marcellus II a new approach to combine elaborate polyphony with the rigid rules of liturgy. Palestrina's tremendous influence can be seen up until today, which will be demonstrated by one of the world's leading vocal ensembles, the RIAS Kammerchor, alternating the different parts of the mass with the most radiant sacred music of the 20th century.
