Udo - Good Things Coming



A title is a statement. On his second album 'Good Things Coming', Udo fulfils the promise of the title in an album that transfuses soul and pop laden with good vibes. The result of rapidly gained experience and the realisation that only one person could be at the helm of this venture: Udo, himself.



For Udo Mechels, the past years have been like a rollercoaster. The man from Nossegem, Belgium that still couldn’t see his music as anything other than a hobby was propelled by fate in another direction. Encouraged by people that believed that that powerful voice should be heard, Udo, with few expectations, took part in the Belgian edition of X Factor. The triumph in the music contest was only the starting point for the development of the artist, Udo. The man who was still somewhat camera shy on television put pen to paper, and wrote a handful of the songs on his debut album and began to win his spurs performing live as well. Unassuming at first, and then more evidently living the dream to allow himself be inspired by real musicians.



That debut album was called 'U-Turn' and it became a hit with singles like 'Isn't it time' and 'Winter in July'. Another song, Tu me manques à mourir, the French version of Will Tura’s Ik mis je zo (I miss you so) still needed another springboard to launch the next step in Udo’s career. The Belgian TV programme, 'Zo is er maar één' (contest to find the best Dutch language song), provided that springboard when Udo won the show with his version of Ik mis je zo. The result: over 10,000 singles sold and a better awareness of what music can mean to others. Everywhere he went, the singer was approached by people who could see a reflection of their own stories in his moving version of the classic Tura number.



Emotions, that’s what it is all about. Soul. Udo carried that awareness right through to his first big live tour - Soul Sessions On Tour – and the mood of his second album. An album from a singer that has proven that he can sing, and who now dares to allow more emotion to flow through his music. After all, music is not about flawless interpretation, but about hitting the right chord…



"This is a fantastic learning experience", Udo explained when he introduced his debut album. Two years later, he has proven his worth; as a singer, he has excelled himself, as a live artist, he has now found his niche amidst a multi-faceted group that have to work hard to keep up with this powerful voice, and as a songwriter, he is no longer content to take a backseat.



While he has held on to his unpretentiousness nature, his self-confidence has grown. Udo co-wrote seven songs for ‘Good Things Coming', and kept a tighter rein on other areas as well. It was his decision not to follow up 'Ik mis je zo' with a Dutch language album, but a CD that echoes his own taste. Rapport with the audience is essential, and an artist can only strengthen that rapport when he shows himself as he is. No masks, no compromises. Just Udo. After all, this is how he intends to go on.



The new Udo is still the old Udo, but a lot closer to the real man. A man that – after that initial shock – has realised that a little luck played a part in him finding his true calling and takes great pleasure in that realisation. 'Good Things Coming' is a title that promises thirteen powerful songs and a lengthy future. The journey has just begun.



Udo - Good Things Coming



Un titre est une déclaration. Sur son deuxième album intitulé « Good Things Coming », Udo concrétise la promesse du titre dans un album soul et pop inondé de bonnes ondes. Le résultat d’une expérience acquise en deux temps trois mouvements et la prise de conscience qu’il ne pouvait y avoir qu’une seule personne aux commandes de cette entreprise : Udo lui-même.



Ces dernières années ont filé comme l’éclair pour Udo Mechels, l’homme originaire de Nossegem qui ne voyait en la musique qu’un passe-temps et que le destin a fait prendre une autre direction. Encouragé par des personnes qui croyaient en cette voix puissante, Udo participa à « X-Factor » en 2005, sans nourrir beaucoup d’illusions. Le triomphe à ce concours musical ne signifiait qu’un point de départ au développement de sa carrière d’artiste. L’homme, que les podiums effrayaient encore un peu à la télévision, affûta sa mine pour écrire quelques chansons sur l’album de ses débuts et commença également à faire ses preuves en live. Tout d’abord discret, puis de plus en plus affirmé avec le rêve d’être accompagné par de vrais musiciens.



Ce premier album, qui s’intitulait « U-Turn », est devenu un hit avec des singles tels que « Isn't it time » et « Winter in july ». Une autre chanson, la traduction de « Tu me manques à mourir » de Will Tura, eut encore besoin d’un petit plus pour permettre à Udo d’avancer. Ce fut chose faite grâce à « Zo is er maar één », le programme télé dans lequel « Ik mis je », selon la version d’Udo, remporta la victoire. Résultat : plus de 10.000 singles vendus et une meilleure idée de ce que la musique peut signifier pour autrui. Car le chanteur fut partout interpellé par des personnes qui voyaient le reflet de leur propre histoire dans sa version poignante du classique de Tura.



Les sentiments, voilà l’essentiel. L’âme. The Soul. Cette prise de conscience contribua à l’organisation de la première grande tournée live d’Udo - Soul Sessions On Tour – ainsi qu’à l’ambiance de son deuxième album. L’album d’un chanteur qui a prouvé qu’il sait chanter et qui ose mettre encore davantage d’émotions dans sa musique. Parce que la musique n’est pas une question d’interprétation sans défaut, mais plutôt de toucher la bonne corde.



« J’apprends plein de choses », racontait Udo lors de la présentation de son premier album. Deux ans plus tard, la preuve est là : en tant que chanteur, il s’est élevé au-dessus de lui-même, en tant qu’artiste live, il trouve aujourd’hui sa place parmi un groupe composé de plusieurs chanteurs qui doit faire de son mieux pour suivre cette voix puissante, et en tant qu’auteur, il ne se contente plus d’une place au second plan.



La discrétion de jadis est restée, la confiance en soi s’est développée. Sur l’album « Good Things Coming », Udo a collaboré à l’écriture de sept chansons, et il a également davantage tenu les rênes dans d’autres domaines. Ainsi, il a lui-même choisi de ne plus faire un album en néerlandais après « Ik mis je zo », mais un CD tel qu’il le ressentait. Le contact avec le public est essentiel, et ce contact s’améliore lorsqu’un artiste se montre sous son vrai jour. Aucun masque, aucun compromis. Tout simplement Udo. Car il doit poursuivre sur sa lancée, armé de ces seules chansons.



Le nouvel Udo ressemble toujours à l’ancien, mais il se rapproche du véritable Udo. Un homme qui – après ce premier choc – a appris à comprendre qu’il avait trouvé sa véritable vocation un peu par hasard, mais qui profite à présent pleinement de cette prise de conscience. « Good Things Coming » est un titre qui présage treize chansons magnifiques et un long avenir. Le voyage ne fait que commencer.
