Tsuumi Sound System – Finnish Urban Ethno



Their live energy has been praised as ”volcanic” or ”outrageous”, their musicians virtuosos and their records as ”dangerously addictive roller-coaster rides”: Besides the award-winning original compositions, this eight-piece Finnish contemporary world music ensemble draws their strength from an exeptionally wide range of tastefully and creatively combined influences. It might have something to do with the band having originated as a musical unit of a contemporary folk dance company, but their music is claimed - and proven by various audiences giving standing ovations all over Europe - highly danceable. It's a big band with a big sound, unique in its instrumentation and ready to take the next leap forward into the spotlight!



Growing Up is the second album by Tsuumi Sound System in it's eight-member formation, again produced by Roger Tallroth, best known as the guitarist for Väsen. Diversity is still an essential quality of the band. The musicians are still Finnish and the music's still Nordic, but as demonstrated here, that can mean a world of things. This time you might sense a bit of acoustic jazz, European folk music heritage, a pinch of Balkan twist and even some Latin edge.



Awards and Nominations



Growing Up was nominated for the best ethnic album in Finnish Grammy Awards 2010.



Casino, composed by Hannu Kella, won 1st price in the Instrumental Jazz Song category at the Just Plain Folks music awards in Nashville, USA, the largest music awards show in the world with over 560000 songs submitted to the competition by JPF members!



HOTAS was nominated amongst 8 other works for TEOSTO prize, the biggest music award in Finland admitted to outstanding musical works and granted by the Finnish Composers' Copyright Society.



HOTAS was nominated for German Music Critic's award in 2008, in the ”Folk & Folklore” category.
