Monkberry Moon Delight - Paul & Linda McCartney (1971) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 29, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
So I sat in the attic,
A piano at my nose,
And the wind played a dreadful cantata (cantata...).

Sore was I from the crack of an enemy's hose,
And the horrible sound of tomato (tomato...).

Ketchup (ketchup)
Soup and puree (Soup and puree),
Don't get left behind (get left behind)...

When a rattle of rats had awoken,
The sinews, the nerves and the veins.
My piano was boldly outspoken, in attempts to repeat its refrain.

So I stood with a knot in my stomach,
And I gazed at that terrible sight
Of two youngsters concealed in a barrel,
Sucking monkberry moon delight.

Monkberry moon delight,
Monkberry moon delight.

Well, I know my banana is older than the rest,
And my hair is a tangled beretta.
When I leave my pajamas to Billy Budapest,
And I don't get the gist of your letter (your letter...).

Catch up! (catch up),
Cats and kittens (cats and kittens),
Don't get left behind (get left behind)...

Monkberry moon delight...
Monkberry moon delight...

"Monkberry Moon Delight" was released by Paul and Linda McCartney on their 1971 album, Ram. This was Paul's second album following the break-up with The Beatles and although it's a seriously fantastic record, as with most solo Beatle records, one can only imagine what a few of the best songs would have sounded like if they had been recorded by The Beatles.

I first became familiar with Ram and most other early Beatle solo records listening to LP's at my cousin's house, too young to understand or care what the lyrics might actually be about. One of the reasons this song was so great was because it was so mysterious and nonsensical. Then later as I learned about John & Paul's jabs at each other on some of their records, the songs meaning became more clear. Basically, "Monkberry Moon Delight" is fame, this much is pretty clear, also:

"Sore was I from the crack of an enemy's hose,
And the horrible sound of tomato (tomato...)"......John's words about Paul's writing.

"two youngsters concealed in a barrel,
Sucking monkberry moon delight".....John and Paul drinking the fame that destroyed their friendship.

I hoped to make a video that would be able to capture at least some of the imagery from the song, so it's fairly loaded; tomatoes, soup, rats, cats, kittens, barrels, youngsters, liquor, pianos, attics, moons, etc...it's all in there! Anyway it's still a very cool tune with a great McCartney vocal!

Thinking 'bout "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" for the next one from Ram?! Till then......
.....Hope you enjoy this one!
