Viola Sonata (2007)
In my first composition lesson with John Mackey I showed him the score and played a recording of my Violin Concerto. After hearing my music he asked, Do you have anything less classical? He told me to compose a piece for a less popular instrument that didnt sound like anything I had written before. Less classical. This was my breaking out of my shell to explore new harmonies and rhythms. In each of the three movements I explored a specific contemporary aspect that was new to me.
