I wonder if I'll have a son
and if I do, will his eyes be like mine
and see the things that mine have seen
will he be anything like me

never knew a father of my own
but I never wished it any other way
never one who wanted to be shown anything
but I bet I get that from him

I wonder if he thinks of me
and wonders where on Earth I am
or if his other son's all right
or if we look anything like him

Does he stare out at the sky
and wonder where it all went wrong
and wonder what he might have been
or if we've ended up like him

I wonder if he believes in God
and if he does, if he knows that he's wrong
if he believes anything at all
or if he's a little more like me

Will I ever have a son
and if I do, will he have my eyes
if he sees the things I've seen
will he be anything like me

whether or not he's anything like me
from the time he opens up his eyes
until the day I die, I'll be looking back at him
