"Big Bayou Canot" - (Tale of the Sunset Limited Train Tragedy) - Original Folk Song by Mike Turner - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 25, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
September 22, 1993, Mobile, Alabama - site of one of the worst passenger train wrecks in U.S. history. A tow boat on the Mobile River becomes lost in heavy fog at about 2am, and slams into the CSX Railway bridge over Big Bayou Canot, a tributary of the Mobile River. Ironically, the railway only bends and doesn't break - so crucial warning systems for oncoming trains are not triggered.

Eight minutes after impact, Amtrack's Sunset Limited, en route from Los Angeles to Miami, roars through at over 70 mph. The bridge disintegrates, plunging the 3 locomotives and first four passenger cars into the river below. To worsen matters, the engines' diesel tanks rupture and the fuel ignites.

Rescue workers are stymied from reaching the site due to its remote location, access only by water, and the continuing heavy fog. By morning, 103 people have been rescued. Tragically, 47 passengers and crew perish.

This song memorializes this tragic event. Played on a Lanikai acoustic, spruce-top baritone ukulele.
