DESCRIPTION:
From Hell, Hull and Halifax written and performed be The Revelator Band, recorded at Hebden Bridge Blues Festival. The title of the song refers to a thief's plea to be spared the harsh punishment offered at these three places. The Gibbet law of Halifax can be traced back to 1280, when it was used as a punishment for cattle theft. When Halifax became the centre of the wool trade, the gibbet was used for anyone caught stealing cloth. The Cragg Vale Coiners, referred to in this song were executed by hanging, rather than the Gibbet, and their bodies were strung up on Beacon Hill overlooking the town, as a deterrent to others. This replica of the Gibbet still stands on Gibbet Street. Such a shame they don't use it these days instead of hasbo's.....lol.
