"Bertha" (The Grateful Dead) : LoloYodel Montage using 5 different concerts.

First played live on 12/15/70 at The Matrix, San Francisco, CA, "Bertha" was played 396 times over the following 25 years. It was played in both 1st and 2nd sets, usually at the beginning of the set and by 1977-1978 it was often coupled with a Bob Weir's "Good Lovin" or "Greatest Story".

Interpretation of "Bertha" ?
Many 'family' folk said Bertha was a very enthusiastic but very large fan. Supposedly in the early days she'd get right up front and obscure the acoustics with her generous mass. The story goes that the band loved her and immortalized her in the song though they had to continually ask her to move as to not mess up the sound.

Why was it named Bertha? Originally a short form of Germanic names ... also appears in southern Germanic legends (often spelled Perchta or Berchta) belonging to a goddess of animals and weaving.

I chose to use the audio from the New Year's Dec. 31st 1987 cause I just find it fine ! Jerry is in good form, hair properly trimmed :-) and the rendition is thorough and strong.
