GBH started in Birmingham, England in 1980, gigging as often as possible around the area. According to the band, the initials GBH stood for "Grevious Bodily Harm", a term for assault used in the British courts (although some disparagingly referred to them as "Great Big Haircuts"). After they established a name for themselves on the local punk scene, they a metal band who had already taken the name "GBH", so they changed their name to "Charged GBH" to avoid a legal dispute (after the demise of the metal band, "Charged GBH" was once again shorted to "GBH"). In 1981, they were signed to Clay Records and released the Leather, Bristles, Studs & Acne 12" and then the No Survivors and Sick Boy EPs. After those went out of print, they released them all on one record entitled Leather, Bristles, No Survivors and Sick Boy. They released their first proper full legnth, City Baby Attacked by Rats in 1982, at the hight of the UK's ever-blossoming (at the time) hardcore punk scene.
