The Joyful Sounds of Selma was originally started by Rev. Milton Brown and the Late Howard Jones in the year of 1989. They both had aspiration and objective to take traditional type gospel music to a new height, through writing and producing their own music.
They truly have created a very unique style and sound. Their first recorded and independently released album “Because of You“, earned them the recognition for being the gospel group to watch in the 90’s. They were showered with great public responses from all the surrounding counties, and locally too.
Their second CD entitled “Shining Star” was released in 1994, and “Jesus Made Me” became their number one hit songs. After signing with Shurfine Gospel Recording Label, the group began to travel from state to state, performing with some of gospels greatest legends, such as The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC’s, and The Canton Spirituals, just to name a few.
Their third CD “Enjoying Jesus” was released in the year 2000. The group had become further established, and by the year 2004 was signed locally with Bama Records. After a short time they recorded and released their fourth CD entitled “Standing”. This recording launched them into newer heights in the business.
Their fifth CD “You Brought Me” is the latest release from the Joyful Sounds, and it has proved to be one of their best recording yet. Today the group consist of Mark Safford, lead singer, Tyrone Barnes, bass player, Willie Lawrence, vocals and keyboards, Marcus Donerlson, drums, Minister Demond T. Baity, tenor, Carlyn L. Baity, lead guitarist and vocals. Present manager Tyrone Barnes, has many great things planned for the group in the near future. He has already started on their next CD project. What’s the name?
