THE AIRPLANE FAMILY & FRIENDS with LIVE DEAD ’69, fresh off their critically acclaimed 2016 inaugural tour – continue in 2017 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of “The San Francisco Sound,” “The Summer of Love” and it’s iconic anthem “Somebody To Love” written by band co-founder Darby Slick. THE AIRPLANE FAMILY reunites Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna and Grateful Dead alumni – with musical luminaries – comprising a veritable “Who’s Who” of ‘The Summer of Love’s’ legendary musicians, and introducing 2 sensational vocalists. The halcyon era performers are:
Slick Aguilar, Jefferson Starship lead guitarist (1992-2015), also David Crosby Band lead guitarist (1983-1986). Since co founding The Kantner, Balin, Casady Band in 1985, Aguilar performed longer with the late Paul Kantner & with Marty Balin - and played the songs of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship more than any other musician ever.
Darby Slick, composer of “Somebody To Love,” who launched the career of Grace Slick in his band The Great Society before she joined Jefferson Airplane in 1966.
Peter Kaukonen, was a founding member of both Hot Tuna & Jefferson Starship, and a member of Jefferson Airplane with his brother Jorma. Peter’s band, Black Kangaroo, was the first group signed by the Airplane’s label, Grunt Records.
Mike Falzarano, a long time member of Jefferson Airplane spinoff Hot Tuna in the 1980s; and, in recent years - helped forge and lead a resurgent, acclaimed iteration of Grateful Dead spinoff, The New Riders Of The Purple Sage.
Prairie Prince, Jefferson Starship drummer (1992-2007), also co-founded The Tubes, regularly tours with Todd Rundgren; and, is a world famous Artist & designer. Prairie also played on the only commercial release by Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh & Friends.
Also featured, are two sensational vocalists …
Eva Avila, acclaimed Canadian Idol winner, actress & star of the acclaimed production “The Wall Live Extravaganza” makes her U.S. debut reprising Grace Slick’s vocal repertoire. Joli Valenti, son of Dino Valenti, sings Marty Balin’s timeless parts & brings selections from Quicksilver Messenger Service who often shared the bill with The Dead & Airplane back in the Fillmore era.
