There have to be copies
Of ideas,
Documents from Xerox type machines,
Atoms,
And molecules,
There have to be copies
And copy machines
But then...the clicking and popping,
Into place, these pieces and copies
This one next to that
It looks interesting and we enjoy it for a time
Whether it be a picture or pictures or a string of words or amino acids
Placed together
Or, to say it in another way, simply slipping your hand into the apparently correct pocket
It feels nice
Chirality, sometimes symmetry, but limited possibilities
So, copies can be dull after a while
They are necessary for building
And so they built
But now they are dull
So you have these groups and factions
This Periodic Table of Drab and Sad Dogmas
Where there is, of course, often humor in the current wretchedness of this standard table
But the status quo is losing its color and it has been lost and it is simply no longer entertaining
FoxNews has its nonsense, the Left has theirs
Some white tower spewing out something about, say, an irreconcilable disjunction between psychoanalysis and neuroscience, has theirs
And some preacher saying the oldest of things
But meaningful talk has always been about synthesis
It should be known, emergence comes through stitching, and stitching in new ways
The advent of the sewing machine was a metaphor
Suggesting perhaps we have the resources to do it faster
And also, that it makes little sense to stitch these enormous new pieces of fabric with that old shit
Who is on the look out for this novel taxon? Or taxa. That must be coming
They are the interpreters, if not the authors
They are, in fact, both thread and machine, and somehow also the hands, and at this point perhaps less surprisingly, the body to which the hands are attached
The mixer of metaphors
But are now, one
All the same, they are one
And so the copy is indeed now the creator and tailor and author, and must set about working to populate this new space with clothes and quilts and books and other metaphorical objects, suited for such a place in order to build what will hopefully be left behind
