David Lynch plays NIN's "Gave Up" on set of Lost Highway - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 09, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
David Lynch repeatedly plays "Gave Up", a song by Nine Inch Nails, to set the mood while he directs rehearsals on the set of his film Lost Highway. This song ultimately didn't make it to the film's score, although NIN's Trent Reznor composed a couple of pieces specifically for the film including "The Perfect Drug", and also produced the soundtrack album for his label Nothing Records. At the end of this clip, the Pixies song "Ana" plays briefly and two characters get up to dance to it. This song was also cut from the finished film; the only music that plays over this moment is the Smashing Pumpkins song "Eye" which is on the soundtrack LP.

This clip is just a small excerpt of a much longer behind-the-scenes documentary featurette included on a home video edition of Lost Highway. I do not own the rights to this footage, it is presented here for historical/critical purposes only. Lynch has worked with NIN a couple of times since this project: he directed the music video for the band's 2013 single "Came Back Haunted", and they also performed in an episode of Lynch's 2017 Twin Peaks series (which also features Balthazar Getty, appearing here twenty years younger). For their 1987 demo tape, the Pixies recorded Lynch's composition "In Heaven" from the Eraserhead soundtrack.
