Disciples - Boom Shaka Lacka Records - 1995 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 08, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
I have been finding, and playing, a fair bit of reggae recently. I lightened up my collection of reggae (and other genres) by around 300 vinyls and sold them off.

Strictly speaking I did not have to 'find' them, I knew where they were, but flicking though every record that I own (a fair few) separating the 'to go' against the 'to stay' encouraged me pick out some records to give a spin on the turntable for the first time in many many many years.

This record by The Disciples on the Boom Shaka Lacka record label is one of more trippy records that was released by the Disciples. Far trippier compared to the earlier releases like 'Prowling Lion', 'Return To Addis' and 'Dub Revolution' which all had a heavier dub orientated sound, the latter with added vocal samples.

Those three 12" records, one would imagine, were only ever going to be spun at a reggae sound. The record uploaded tonight, 'Chant Of Freedom' I would hazzard a guess, would not sound too out of place at a Whirly - Gig event, or a Club Dog night, the B-side version especially so.

Boom Shaka Lacka was a reggae Sound System a few years before a record label was formed.

The Disciples go further back to the mid 1980's and a relationship with Jah Shaka, that gave way to several 'Jah Shaka meets the Disciples' type dub album showcases that were released to the public towards the end of the 1980's on the Jah Shaka record label.

I went to several Boom Shaka Lacka Sound System nights in and around London throughout the early 1990's, and remember those nights fondly.

I would go to as many Boom Shaka Lacka Sound System nights as I could. Ditto the Manassah Sound System night's, Iration Steppas, Eastern Sher, Zion Train, Conscious Sounds, Joey Jay, and of course the Earth shattering nights featuring the Jah Shaka and Fatman Sound Systems.

A great time to be going out several times a week, and as an added bonus, specifically with Conscious Sounds and Boom Shaka Lacka nights, more often than not, I would be able to blag a guest list place, as Southern Record Distribution was distributing these record labels at the time! Manassah Sound System nights also, as I kind of (tenuously) knew that crew outside of the work environment.

Fatman Sound System nights I always got in free!

The copy of 'Chant Of Freedom' that is uploaded this evening is my personal white label pre-release version, and for the visuals I scanned the record's centre label and have also scanned a couple of flyers that I found of a couple of Boom Shaka Lacka Sound System nights that I attended.

Great stuff.

One day I will have to revisit the experiences of a digi-dub sound system night, hear some new material, stick my head in the bass bins, generally stay up late.

Not several times a week though mind.
