Lonnie Liston Smith’s BIO states that he was born into a musical family and learned to play the piano, tuba, and trumpet while in high school and college. While attending college, Smith played as a pianist in the Baltimore area and was the backing for a number of jazz singers. Lonnie Liston Smith’s music background is massive and his contributions to music spans over 30 years. He cites John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis as his influencers. When he began to pursue music as his career, he was the featured guest and played on the compilations of some top-of-the-line jazz musicians such as Stanley Turrentine, Gato Barbieri, and Miles Davis [to name a few]. A master keyboardist, Lonnie started his own group called “Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes” between 1973 and 1985 and, after, he started working towards his solo career. “Explorations” was released in 2002, but since then, Lonnie Liston Smith spends his time performing live and touring in Europe. His popularity in the jazz community has also led him to teach music at workshops.
