UPDATE: November 11, 2015

The results of a recent PET scan show that Elizabeth's most recent round of chemotherapy was ineffective. The disease did not respond, and she now has AML throughout her body. Today, while her blood counts remain low, she will begin another round, one the doctors hope will penetrate the masses of leukemia that surround her bones. This process will put her at a high risk for infections. We remain hopeful that she will get some relief and begin to feel better over the next week. She will continue to receive low dose radiation to a few spots, but this is done for pain management, not disease control. Radiation cannot cure AML. If these new drugs help, they will continue to use them to try to get her eligible for a bone marrow transplant. The BMT is the only path to a cure for relapsed AML. If no progress is made with this new treatment, or if Elizabeth continues to feel worse, the AML will not be considered curable, and she will then undergo treatment to keep the AML at bay for as long as possible while they manage her pain. AML does not work in stages, and they don't talk about time tables. All we know now is that this next week or so is key to the future.

There are no words for this.

Elizabeth insisted on being present for all the hard conversations yesterday as she faces this latest challenge. She remains remarkably poised and resilient. Although she is scared, she selflessly spends all her worries on her family and continues to fight.
We parents continue on intermittent FMLA leave at work as we rotate 24 hr coverage at the hospital. Donated leave from CMS (Ben and Katie) and Rowan Salisbury (Nicole) schools is very much appreciated. Know that we need to work, that being teachers and coaches is important to the strength of our families, even if that means that when you see us, we may be choking back tears.

Thank you for your continued support and love.

UPDATE: November 3, 2015

After only a month since her last clean bone marrow biopsy and 2 months since recovering from a life threatening infection at the end of her chemotherapy treatment, AML has returned in Elizabeth as lesions all around the length of her spine. She currently has very little feeling in both of her legs. She has already had surgery to install a new port and is currently receiving another round of chemotherapy to work against the leukemia in order to receive a bone marrow transplant. This is considered a relapse, and the course of treatment now includes a transplant.

Since April, Elizabeth has never had a break from pain, and yet she still smiles, she still keeps her family strong.

The Barry and Perrier families are strong, but their work leave balances are depleted and the costs continue to mount.

Please help us in donating what you can and sharing this page. Every little bit helps and every bit is needed.

While my niece Elizabeth has just completed her first round of chemo I have been thinking about what I could do to help the cause and cheer her up. Her story is below, but she is far more than the disease she battles. Please WATCH, SHARE and GIVE if you can.

Love,
Uncle Pat

P.S. Please also go buy some of the Killers and Brandon Flowers music if you like the song. Fellas, if you found this...thanks for the excellence. (http://www.thekillersmusic.com/)

On 4/20/15, 14 year old Elizabeth Barry was diagnosed with AML, a type of leukemia.

The video attached (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MzdQxwCmNQ) explains what has happened to our Elizabeth. There are a lot of unknowns associated with this kind of event, not just the fear of health and the future.

The Barrys are prideful people, but out of network health costs, gas to and from the hospital, flights, and limited work can be devastating to a family. This is all on top of their concern for Elizabeth and her treatment.

The first portion of her care was in Buffalo, which was out-of-network for their insurance. Elizabeth was also put on a private jet with a medical team to be transported to Charlotte. We really have no idea what kind of financial implications the family will face, but as anyone who has dealt with insurance and medical care costs knows, they will be more than one family can bare. Especially a family that already survives on teacher salaries. Elizabeth's care and treatment is all that matters now though, so being proactive in our request for your help is our only action.

Please understand that this will be updated regularly as we truly understand the needs and costs. The need could be $10,000 or $100,000+, there is really no way to know right now.

We all appreciate your support in honor of Elizabeth.

Every bit helps, so if you can... please do.
