"Stocainnean Daoimean Puirt-a-Beul Set" - Oran nan Car - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 16, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Oran nan Car, with the Shelton Highland Dancers, performing "Stocainnean Daoimean / Làrach do Thacaidean / M'Eudail Air do Shùilean Donna" at the release party for their self-titled album, held at the Ethnic Cultural Theater in Seattle, Washington on April 19, 2008.

"Diamond Stockings / The Prints of your Tackety Boots / My Treasure, Your Brown Eyes" (arrangement by Seumas Gagne, Penny DeGraff, and Oran nan Car). Since the main point of mouth music is to provide rhythm for dancing, the lyrics are often full of nonsense or snippets of gossip. In this particular set, the gossip seems to focus on shoes and socks and seeking love.

The first tune tells how handsome the diamond stockings, or Argyle socks, look in fancy "lorns" (shoes) as the fellow was seen climbing the stairs of the Royal hotel last night.

In the next tune, a fellow madly in love with the miller's daughter is advised by his friend to get finer footwear since he'll never make any headway with her as long as he wears clumsy hob-nail boots.

In the final tune, a lovesick fellow dreams of his love with the brown eyes and beautiful body.
