Cyril Newton with syncopated quartet
HMV B2156 (released December 1925)

Another example of Cyril Newton ‘baritone’ with instrumental quartet. Alas the instrumentalists are not named: perhaps Savoy colleagues?

This is another pristine-looking copy with lashings of crackle in the groove. The recorded sound is thin. The quartet sounds to be some distance away from the microphone, and the sound lacks body; Newton has that strained quality which afflicted his (microphone?) voice.

A reviewer in The Gramophone of December 1925 wrote “Cyril Newton does his best with that maddeningly stupid song Chick, Chick, Chicken (HMV B2153, 3s)”. The Western Morning News on 21 December had: “Cyril Newton must get better songs than ‘Chick, Chick, Chicken’. A clever accompaniment!” WHERE IS THAT GIRL did not get a mention; though it is interesting to compare it with his version with the Savoy Orpheans; if only for the better sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdVWxnZWjEs

The matrix numbers indicate early-October 1925 for the recording; which is about a month after the Savoy Orpheans session in the link.
