Sarah LeMieux loves music, and hates it when people try to pigeonhole hers. Yeah, it’s pretty bluesy; sure, it’s often jazzy - but her music is also also experimental, folky, literate, and urban: authentic and innovative, happy and sad. Sarah uses her voice to tell her stories, sometimes as a smoky growl, sometimes as a silky trill; Bonnie Raitt meets Billie Holiday.
Sarah started out playing blues piano with her father, and French new-wave folk with her mother. Singing in the church choir wove delicate harmonies through her emerging sense of sound. Early in Sarah’s musical career, she worked as a backup singer and guitarist for some lunatic indie-rockers on the Lower East Side. Later on, she fronted the house bands at the C-Note, Lillie’s and Hank’s Saloon’s blues nights.
Her dues paid her back when she began writing and performing her own material after the birth of her daughter. Her unique fusion of jazz, blues, folk, storytelling and lyric poetry caught on quickly on local (WPKN, WFSU) and international radio stations (CKIA Quebec) and podcasts from Australia to Japan. She was invited to perform at North Carolina’s National Women in Blues Festival in 2007. Japan’s BSMF records caught wind, and released Sarah’s first album “Superbleu” in the Asian market. She followed up with regional tours and festival appearances at Mamapalooza and SWAN Day CT two years running, headlined the Park City Regatta and the Lilly Awards and released “Glow Rosy,” her jazzy sophomore effort, in 2008. Her 2009 single “Shut Out.” is pure torch heartbreak.
Her latest release, “Wait for Your Love,” is the first of four singles to be released over the upcoming four months. It's soulful, slow, and a little funky - like a Marvin Gaye lullaby, like a - go ahead, define it however you like. Then see what comes next.
