Can going to the barbershop save your life? Researchers say, Maybe - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 01, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
Aging black men are at greater risk of dying prematurely of colorectal cancer than any other group in the United States, and are less likely than their white counterparts to be diagnosed at an early stage of the disease. Now a new study finds that patients who enrolled for screening through patient navigator programs at local barbershops were twice as likely to get screened for colorectal cancer. The MISTER B study (the Multi-intervention study to Improve colorectal cancer Screening and To Enhance Risk reduction in Black men) is the first to operate in community settings rather than medical settings. Participants who received help from the patient navigators in MISTER B were twice as likely to get screened as those who did not receive a patient navigator.
What do you think about this approach to addressing health issues for Black men? Have you seen medical care offered in your communities outside of hospitals and clinics? Share your thoughts and let us know.
