DESCRIPTION:
Lily Maase is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, composer, and leader of instrumental rock trio the Suite Unraveling (with Michael Kammers, sax/keys and Curt Garey, drums/laptop).
In November 2011, the Suite Unraveling received a residency grant from Texas A&M University and spent three days working with the majority of the liberal arts program at large, a student population of nearly 900.
Lily & the Suite presented music, addressed student inquiries into aesthetics and the challenges of traveling cross-country as a bassless trio, and introduced some alternative improvisation concepts by way of a live composition technique known as Soundpainting.
This excerpt from one of their three residency presentations is a brief explanation of Walter Thompson's Soundpainting concept as interpreted by the group.
The full performance of the piece 'ether-not' from the same residency is also available on You-Tube.
