PRESENTED BY CHERYL WIWAT

Stone Iris is a soulful, new-blues rock band out of Edmonton, Alberta. Six years ago, the Niven brothers – El and Garret – and Jeff Burwash moved into a house together with their instruments and an unwavering determination to become a touring rock band. For three years they honed their art, then they hit the road. Stone Iris doggedly toured the US and Canada in an RV – “The Freedom Eagle” – several times in three years, clocking thousands of miles and hundreds of gigs. Consistent touring and writing grew this group of tenacious, fresh-out-of-high-school rockers, into a solid, unique and seasoned band who has carved out a deep and edgy niche. Their sound, a raw reflection of the vibe within, brings new meaning to the word classic. Feeling the music they write, they leave people feeling it too. In a musical landscape saturated with numerous bands and genres, Stone Iris leaves an inter-generational impression. With elements of rock and blues, combined with undertones of a lyrical western tradition, Stone Iris’ live shows are steeped in emotion and grit.

Stone Iris has had a lasting impact on music fans from Vancouver to New Orleans. They’ve broken-down in Hollywood, played on the streets for gas money from St Louis to Kelowna, performed porch shindigs in Tennessee and Hip Hop open mic nights in Atlanta. They’ve played college parties in Toronto and blues jams in San Francisco. Stone Iris has burned across the Southwest Deserts to the Northern Tundra, playing country roadhouses, big city clubs and just about every type of venue in between.

Leaving a part of themselves behind on stage at the end of each night, yet gaining so much in return, the band grew to see that music is more than the thing that puts you in front of a crowd or in someone’s ipod. At the heart of music is the pulse which connected our forefathers to one another around the fire, and it bonds us still. Show by show, jam by jam, Stone Iris’ slow-burning groove rekindles listeners with the big-hearted and infectious feeling of unity.

El Niven (guitar and vocals), is lover of the rythym and riff. With a powerful and soothing voice, he packs value to every word he sings. Garrret Niven (guitar and vocals), has honed in on his own strong style of bittersweet six string magic. He blends vocals with El, layering meaning to well-penned lyrics. Drummer Jeff Burwash is the machine behind the machine. The bones of the groove and the pulse of it all.

Their latest release, Grande National was recorded at Deadbird Studios in Louisville KY, while on tour. The album has garnered much attention from media and music lovers. Alan Cross, internationally acclaimed music reviewer stated, “This damn song is so infectious, it’s ridiculous.” Stone Iris has also been featured in the Edmonton Journal, and was Sonic 102.9’s Band Of The Month for March 2013, receiving steady FM radio play.
