Elevate My Mind - Stereo MC's (1990) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 19, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
"Elevate My Mind" was the first successful single by Stereo MC's, from their second album release, 1990's "Supernatural". It has the distinction of being the first British rap-based single to enjoy success on the U.S. R&B charts, while also reaching #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Stereo MC's are an English electronic dance/rap group, which formed in Clapham, London in 1985. The book "Guinness Rockopedia" described them as 'the big boys of British rap'. Vocalist Rob 'Rob B' Birch (born Robert Charles Birch, 11 June 1961, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, England) and DJ/producer Nick 'The Head' Hallam (born 11 June 1960, Nottingham, England) founded their Gee Street recording studio and record label, with money they were given to leave their London flat and, dispensing with using a backing band, traveled to early gigs on public transport. When Gee Street attracted the attention of 4th & Broadway, they recorded their debut Stereo MC's album "33-45-78" in 1989 on a shoestring budget with DJ Cesare, drummer Owen If (born Ian Frederick Rossiter, 20 March 1959, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales) and backing vocalist Cath Coffey (born Catherine Muthomi Coffey). In 1990, "Elevate My Mind" was the first British hip-hop single to reach the U.S. R&B chart. Supporting the Happy Mondays on a U.S. tour helped to ensure chart success for "Supernatural". Their live band included singers Andrea Bedassie and Verona Davis, and they were one of the few hip-hop outfits to play rock music festivals at the time. Remix work for U2, Madonna, PM Dawn, Queen Latifah, Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy, Monie Love and Electronic all followed. Rob B and The Head are still highly sought-after producers, with most of their remixes being done under the name Ultimatum. This channel is dedicated to all the great rap music from back in the day. The music that started the whole hip-hop revolution, the incredible music from the 70s, the 80s, and the early 90s . . . The Roots Of Rap are here!
