Spirit of the Outlaws
Somewhere on the wind tonight
you can hear Ralph Mooney work that pedal steel
and Richie Albrights kick drum is driving
outlaw sound into the scarlet darkness holding
Texas and Tennessee wrapped in its memory.
A white telecaster, black clad in hand-tooled leather
lifts a long low note from another day and time
presses music into life,
and country rocks with a vibration
of guitar strings and renegade spirit rising.
Are you ready for the country;
are you ready for me?
Like a redtail hawk the music flies higher
and higher still,
blending with Oklahoma wind sweeping
outlaw harmonies across New Mexico and Arizona,
a living force freed from chains.
Men, they may make the music
but music makes the man,
and there are no boundaries now, no barbed wire fences
that can hold a desperado soul
once it tastes the freedoms burning fire.
Are you ready for the country;
are you ready for me?
Somewhere on the wind tonight
the spirit of the outlaws is still burning bright
breathing music into men and women,
setting flames to light the night sky up
from New York to LA.
Its still breaking down the barriers
new voices lifting up old battle flags,
but old Hanks still out there too,
still moaning out the blues
and Waylons still kicking open doors
for the outlaws pouring through.
Are you ready for the country;
are you ready for me?
