Having gained notoriety in Japan and worldwide for release after release featuring MCs from hip hop’s golden era such as “Here We Go” featuring Large Pro (Large Professor), and “No Love Lost” featuring Diamond D, Southpaw Chop’s latest 7 inch release features funky instrumentals on both sides.

メイントラックとなる「Funky Soul Brother」はタイトルが物語っているように、丸々一曲がジェームス・ブラウン絡みのサンプリングソースのみで構成されており、有名ネタからとっておきの隠し玉まで、頭からラストまで様々なJBビートがスリリングに展開する。さらにスクラッチDJとして、今飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いのDJ Koco a.k.a. Shimokitaが参戦。彼のコスリがさらにこの曲のファンキー度合いをアップさせている。

As the name would suggest, the main track “Funky Soul Brother” is built entirely from samples of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, ranging from classics to rarities. From start to finish, the funk hits hard. Scratches by featured artist DJ Koco a.k.a. Shimokita cut the funk to another level.

カップリングは、Southpaw Chopとしては珍しいアップテンポなトラックの「Down On It」だ。ラテンなフレイバーもあるドライなドラムのサンプリングビートが効果的に響き、ブレイクダンサーであれば踊らずにはいられないであろう王道のBボーイ・ブレイクとなっている。

On the flip side, Chop shows his versatility with an uptempo joint for the B-boys and B-girls entitled "Down On It". With a Latin flavor breakbeat and dry, tight drums, this track is aimed squarely at the dancefloor. True DJs and beat jugglers worldwide will need two copies of this release to keep the breaks flowing.

ちなみに、いずれの曲もこれまでSouthpaw Chopと共演してきたアーティストの有名曲とあえてネタを被せており、DJにとってもミックスしやすい、DJフレンドリーな仕様となっている。つまり、今回もまた二枚買い＝二枚使い必須な７インチと言えよう。
