Misirlou (in Greek: Egyptian Girl) are an experimental collaboration between five musicians dedicated to exploring and developing new sounds and ideas. They compose, arrange and improvise music that draws on traditional Balkan, Arab and klezmer music as well as jazz and Western contemporary music. Scottish flautist Lucy Forde specializes in both modern and baroque flute as well as jazz techniques, which complements Meg Hamiltons knowledge of Ashkenazi, Greek and Bulgarian string playing. Merit Stephanos, who is half German and half Egyptian, sings in several European languages as well as Arabic. Suzie Li on bass and Frazer Watson on darabucka contribute virtuosic technique and energy, though they come from different musical backgrounds: Suzie is classically trained whilst Frazer studied with folk musicians in Bulgaria. Misirlous members are in high demand as freelance performers both nationally and internationally.
