"Farewell Blues", Phil Emerson: Guitars - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 29, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
I actually played this song for many years with my brother, Ken...We learned Sol Ho'opi'i's version with a National Tricone slide guitar...Ken & I would do all kinds of wild things to it...Ragtime bass lines, doubletime sections...Ken would play chicken, cow, train, bombs dropping sounds on his steel guitar...Years later, I did a series of our old favorites, playing Archtop acoustic guitars, recorded straight into an old michrophone...do two tracks...all done...after a while, I got pretty good sounding recordings...those guitars are hard to record...I used a 1930 Gibson 16" L-5...A c 32 Martin C-3 roundhole archtop, a late 30's Epiphone Deluxe, a c 32 Gibson L-50 roundhole...others too...It SOUNDS like the c 30 L-5 doing the head and solo track...I believe it is the Martin C-3 doing Bass lines/Rhythm chords, on the 2nd track...Two guitars, two tracks...One Pass...Done....I turned it into a swing tune here, without the wicky wacky woo thing....( I kind of miss it, tho', I have to admit...Ken & I will have to record the whacko version some day )
