The Chase by Clinic - mix from "Road to Salina" (1970) and "Kill Bill Vol. 2" (2004) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 30, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
This is a tribute to the musical piece "The Chase" (composed and performed by Clinic - Alan Reeves, Phil Steele, and Philip Brigham). I'd like to show you how two directors, Gerard Lautner and Quentin Tarantino used this musical piece in their films, "Road to Salina" and "Kill Bill Vol. 2" accordingly. The video commences with a scene from "Road to Salina", proceeds with "Kill Bill" scene and concludes with two more scenes from "Road to Salina" (once you've watched it, you'll understand why I'd chosen such an order) - with no intervals between them.
As of track itself, here's what Wikipedia gives: "The Chase" was put together initially as a jam thing that they wrote specifically for Road to Salina, as opposed to some of the other tunes in that film that were written before it, and they just happened to fit. Phil Brigham started playing "The Chase" by spontaneously playing the guitar riff that opens the tune. Alan Reeves played some rock/classical organ on top of it. At one point, they go to another section with four sustained chords which Alan Reeves came up with, just to get some relief from the repetitiveness of the riff".
Onscreen: "Road to Salina" scene 1 - Mimsy Farmer, "Kill Bill" - Daryl Hannah and Michael Madsen; "Road to Salina" scene 2 - Mimsy Farmer and Robert Walker Jr. (Jennifer Jones's son), "Road to Salina" scene 3 - Ed Begley (his last role), Robert Walker Jr. and Sophie Hardy.
Note the interesting mix (by Clinic as well) starting from 02:22.
That Quentin used the music from this film (not only "The Chase", but also "Sunny Road to Salina") is by no means incidental: the rights to the "Road to Salina" soundtrack belonged to record producer Francis Dreyfus, father of Julie Dreyfus who portrayed the character of Sofie Fatale in "Kill Bill Vol. 1".
Enjoy!
