Lifelong friends Nobba, Simon, and Calvin started The Smoking Hearts in 2007. They were joined by drummer Matty and singer Rodd who they knew from other local bands. After recording their debut album Pride of Nowhere to rave reviews in from the British music press, The Smoking Hearts started their national tour to support their release. It was then that Rodd inexplicably quit the band.
Armed with a handful of demos recorded in Matty's bedroom, The Smoking Hearts decided to search for a new singer.
"It was more through stubbornness than anything" says bassist Calvin. "I sat on the sofa at home with Sime and listened to the demos we had, and knew that we had to make another record."
The band contacted Ben Mills of Essex hardcore band The Takeover who had once opened for The Smoking Hearts at a show in London. After meeting at Sonisphere Festival a week later, and partying together for the next 3 days straight, Ben was confirmed as the new vocalist, and began writing together immediately.
The material they came up with forms The Smoking Hearts second record Victory!
Recorded with Dan Weller and Justin Hill (Sikth, Enter Shikari, Young Guns), and recorded over a period of 4 weeks in Fortress Studios, London, Victory! is an aptly titled record.
"they're songs we didn't think would ever be heard" says guitarist Sime. "to have recored them and be releasing them feels like we've cheated death".
Clocking in at just over the half an hour mark, Victory! is a celebration. Featuring guest backing vocals from over 40 of the bands friends, Victory! is a party of an album, the soundtrack to every good night out. And with it, The Smoking Hearts intend on celebrating their victory worldwide.
