BRIAN JACKSON FETZER, "Salt Lake City — Ready to Fly!" (Corona of an Eclipse Productions) ***
"Salt Lake City — Ready to Fly" is an eclectic mix of music with one thing in common — celebrating the diversity of Utah's capital city.
The 23 tracks on this CD represent a wide range of musical styles, from country to jazz to pop. All of the words and music are by Brian Jackson Fetzer, and he's featured on the majority of the songs. And joining Fetzer are members of his band (Doc Jackson and the American Good Times Country Band), the Children's Chorus at Oakridge Elementary School, the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir and members of the Utah Symphony. Together, they create music that is often inspirational, at times humorous and always full of hope and joy.
Fetzer has also included a few purely instrumental numbers in this collection. In the section labeled "Uptown Trilogy," "Give Me That Jazz!" and "Uptown Cats, Hummin' and a Countin' " are a couple of fun, spunky, get-up-and-dance numbers.
One of the loveliest songs on this album, though, is "Colors," a lyrical portrait of the Salt Lake International Peace Gardens.
In fact, all of Fetzer's songs are melodic and easy to listen to. You'll find yourself constantly hitting the repeat button on your CD player to hear your favorite songs over and over again.
And there's no way you can keep yourself from humming these catchy tunes — as if you really wanted to stop anyway. Fetzer's got a winner here.
