A review on our performance by the world renowned soprano Alison Pearce:
"When I ventured outside the environs of Covent Garden to Shoreditch to hear Alekos Vretos at Richmix I wasn't quite sure
where I was going or what sort of music experience I should expect.

However it was an explosion for the senses in every way. Not only was the sound entrancing in a slightly mystical way but the atmosphere and professionalism of all the players involved was stunning.

What is it about the oud that is so inviting ? The sound stirs the senses in a primal way overlain with the sophistication of jazz fusion and highly trained artistry as displayed by Alekos and his fellow musicians.

But that is only the beginning and you must be there to understand the subtlety and interplay of the music compositions to really feel the improvisational energy of each piece which can be carefully crafted or appear to be about to send you crazy with excitement.

This phenomenon is not an English experience so how lucky are we to have this musical opportunity in our midst. We didn't need to venture to the Middle East for the sound of the oud but had the experience in the East End!!

Look out for Alekos Vretos wherever you can catch him in the world. He contacts brilliantly with the audience when speaking invitingly in husky smokers tones heavy with his Greek accent. Then he plays like an angel one moment and a demon the next. What more could you want?!
