John Newton’s simple words, "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me," do not dodge the wretchedness of our sin. Still, the words touch us and draw us to confession because they so clearly strive to represent the awful consequences of our sin as honestly as they do the amazing grace of our God. Grace is all the more beautiful when we face the ugliness of our sin. Yet we do not confess our wretchedness to wallow in self-pity or merit divine mercy; we confess our destitution so that our hearts will be enraptured anew and motivated afresh by the riches of our Saviour's love. – Bryan Chapell
