SMP | Ultimatum | Review | The Stranger

SMP's sophomore release burns with even more white hot fury than its 1995 debut, stalemate. Matt Sharifi & Xian Di Marris pound out heavy percussion under layers of samples, loops and electronic bass-lines. Jason Bazinet's punk rock rap attack sounds like a manifesto for anti-government extremists. His hardcore rhymes encourage working class political resistance: "gang wars over product/ police state heating up/you think your the exception/ you better think again" he growls on "enemies". Here at last is a wake up call to other industrial groups simply fine tuning old formulas.

SMP | Ultimatum | Review | The Industrial Factory

SMP's second full length album further cements their standing as one of the most exciting bands as they fuse precise programming, driving rhythms, inventive samples, and a strong hip-hop influence. This is what Consolidated could have been had they stuck with the formula from "Tool and Die." Instead, SMP, led by Jason Bazinet, pick up the pieces of industrial-hip-hop which were left behind by Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto, and Pop Will Eat Itself, and gives it the kick in the ass it needed. Check out tracks like "Militia Love," "Nil Factor," and the album's best track, "Electric Prod" and see for yourself why SMP is one of the most underrated acts in the underground electro-industrial genre.

SMP | Ultimatum | Review | Indielive | 1998

Seattle Washington's SMP have put together an impressive package. The booklet art work is magnificent with a 9mm handgun held in shadows while the American flag flaps in the background. I'm very into their mixture of Industrial/Rap/Metal music.

The only other band that can even half way attempt this sound is PWEI although don't take that as meaning that they sound like PWEI 'cause they don't. SMP have a dark brooding sound wrapped in layers with industrial-like distorted vocals done in a rap or hard-core manner. It's a different sound that I much enjoyed. I would give this CD a nine out of ten. The only reason for not giving them a ten out of ten is because although there was variety from track to track, the overall vocals tended to have the same 'sound' throughout with slightly different delivery patterns. - Klive Burns
