The Breast Knot is a wedding tune written circa 1750, possibly earlier. Bridesmaids would tie blue coloured ribbons to the bride's dress and after the ceremony these would be plucked by young men hoping to find a lady who would, 'tie the knot', with them.
Also...'"In the seventeenth century, one or two of the bride-favours were always blue. These were knots of coloured ribbons loosely stitched on to the wedding gown, which were plucked off by the guests at the wedding feast, and worn as luck-bringers in the young men's hats."
Part 2. The Bridesmaids Song.
The discovery of The Breast Knot.

The tune was 're-discovered' on May 27th 1913 ...'An extant dance has been found and recorded by Miss Phyllis Marshall in Somerset. It has received Mr Sharp's (Cecil Sharp) sanction, as genuine tradition. `The Breast Knot' is its title, and the tune is now also recorded (written down) and sent in to the Director.'
In Cecil Sharp's manuscripts, copies of which can be seen in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, The Breast Knot is tune FT2864. Sharp's note to the tune records: 'Sent me by Miss Marshall 29th May 1913. 11 Woodstock Rd, Oxford.'
