DESCRIPTION:
In the two years since they were last in Australia, The River and the Road have been refining their new album, touring all over Canada from Halifax to Vancouver twice and planning another Australian tour. Cross pollination in the studio lends itself to a tighter live act and plenty to look forward to... now they've finally escaped winter. The AU review's Larry caught up with Andrew Phelan from the group while at Canadian Music Week to talk about it all.

Despite their Canadian home, they have a growing interest in Australia 'It doesn't hurt having family in Sydney for sure but we played a lot of cool places in Melbourne and busking a lot... I let the Canadians do most of the talking cause my accent is very exotic in Australia'. They're keen to bring their new material to Australia for a more concise tour next time: 'We won't just be sleeping on floors'.

The cross pollination of a full and stable band is helping in the studio and live- 'The first one was just Keenan, the other singer, and myself...I played drums and we had some hired musicians...now the 4 of us we were recording in Toronto late last year and finished the album off in November...we've all really started developing our own sound...we recorded a lot of it live so we started watching how each other plays in the studio...it definitely tightens all the bolts because I'm thinking like a drummer or a bass player and they're thinking like a guitarist or a singer'.

As well as playing Squamish Fest with Sam Smith, Mumford and Sons and Drake, the Canadian summer is going to be an interesting one weather wise too: 'Back in Toronto when it gets hotter...I was up at a cabin today this morning, and we were sitting: it was 30 degrees on the beach. I had my feet in the water, my shirt off, I was looking across the bay and the hills across the other side had snow on them... the lake I had my feet in was frozen over a few weeks ago.'
