"like swimmers" written by Evan Chapman
Performed by Sean M. Gill as part of Holographic (http://weareholographic.com) on December 12th, 2013 in the Indiana University Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center Grand Hall.

"like swimmers" is a piece I wrote for an extraordinary percussionist named Matt Jordan. The piece is influenced by and based off of the 1964 work by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein entitled "We Rose Up Slowly" (http://www.lichtensteinfoundation.org/0208.htm). I created this projection specifically for a multimedia recital that Sean M. Gill will be traveling with.

The intro of "like swimmers" was originally written for the percussionist to be rubbing the lips of tuned wine glasses, but we modified that for this performance. On this concert, Sean & I handed out individual bells and pipes to different audience members, scattered evenly around the hall. Each bell and pipe had a colored sticker on it, corresponding with a note in a Dmaj7 chord. The audience members were told to quietly play their bell or pipe at their own pace until they saw their color (the color of their sticker) being projected, at which point they should then raise up their bell/pipe and play louder. The resulting atmosphere was serene and dream-like, with waves of pitches of the Dmaj7 chord coming from all angles.
